Living The Dream
The idea of this blog was conceived a few years ago, but life got in the way.
Kevin and I met 8 years ago and instantly knew that we had a lot in common. We both have a taste for the slow lane. We love learning, particularly about how things work, hands on if at all possible. We love any opportunity to make pretty much anything from scratch. I enjoy the challenge of working with textiles- my favorites are sewing clothing, upholstering, and other various things around the house. Kevin is a creative type too, a writer and incredible cook. When we started dating, we had so many ideas of what our future would hold. We had dreams of homesteading on our own small farm, adventuring, traveling, and living a life full of learning together. We still want that, really, but our plans have been seriously derailed.
Right now, we live in Chicago. We met just before I bought my first condo, and Kevin moved in with me when we got married. We were on the 3 year plan for the city, before we would move on and get some actual land. Right now, we have a garden plot at my parents house which is over an hour’s drive away, and a community garden about two miles from our house which is just too far to walk with our daughter.
Kevin was diagnosed with acute lymphocytic leukemia (ALL) in November of 2012 and our lives took on a whole new shape. For those of you who have not been touched by something like this let me tell you that there is nothing in life that will provide more clarity to what is truly important than being faced with the risk of losing what you love the most. For that lesson, I am grateful for the experience.
Several months ago, when things finally started feeling like less of an emergency with Kevin’s health, I was overcome with the drive to finally change our lifestyle to be one more in keeping with how we really want to be living. I know this is not a new idea, and not even a new story, but it’s our story and we invite to you join us. My goal for this blog is to have a space for accountability and community. I want to set our intentions out to the world in hopes of making them a reality.
